Item ID shows along with field

I am using a filtered lookup in a calendar to only show select future events.  I'm then doing some testing via a SPD workflow.  The user uploads a document and assigns the document to one of the events (from the filtered lookup).  When I send myself an email showing the document title and event, the event always shows ID;#event.  I'm not sure how it's creating the ID;# and I need it not to be there.  I'm taking the workflow and then assigning other information based on comparing the filtered lookup with the calendar and it doesn't work.  I'm assuming it's because of the ID;# means that they aren't defined as the same.  Any thoughts on why or how I can remove the ID stuff?

I see this same issue when viewing the list in dataview.
